The most common question I get is not about the price. It is: when should I actually go?
The short answer: January and February. The rest of this article is about why, and why in Aysén it works a little differently than in the rest of Patagonia.
The short answer
- January and February: warmest, longest daylight, least rain. The southern summer in full force.
- December and March: one to three degrees cooler and wetter, but quieter and cheaper.
- June to August: the southern winter. Empty roads, snow, eight and a half hours of daylight. Beautiful, if that is exactly what you are coming for.
Month by month
The numbers below are long-term averages for Coyhaique, the region's capital. It lies on the eastern, drier side of the Andes, in Puerto Aysén it rains roughly twice as much, and on the outer fjords more still. Take this as a guide, not a forecast.
| Month | Day / night | Rainfall | Rainy days | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 16 / 6 °C | 60 mm | 8 | 15 h |
| December | 18 / 8 °C | 60 mm | 8 | 15.5 h |
| January | 20 / 9 °C | 55 mm | 8 | 15 h |
| February | 20 / 8 °C | 45 mm | 7 | 14 h |
| March | 17 / 7 °C | 75 mm | 9 | 12.5 h |
| June | 6 / 0 °C | 140 mm | 14 | 8.5 h |
The most telling column is the last one. In mid-January you have over fifteen hours of daylight, the sun rises around a quarter past six and sets after nine in the evening. In June, eight and a half hours. That is not a difference in comfort; it is a difference in what you can get done in a day.
And then there is the thing the table cannot show. In Patagonia, all four seasons take their turn within a single day. Sun in the morning, rain at noon, an icy wind off the Andes in the afternoon, a clear sky in the evening. The wind is strongest in summer. Anyone expecting stable weather is going wrong, not in the wrong month, but with the wrong expectations.
How you fly there and what it costs
The gateway to the region is Balmaceda Airport (BBA). From Santiago de Chile it is a flight of about two and a half hours, from there an hour by car to Coyhaique and another hour to Puerto Aysén. Further west, the road ends.
From Prague, that means two to three connections, typically via Madrid (sometimes also Bogotá or Lima) to Santiago and on to Balmaceda. When I searched in August 2026 for a return flight for our dates in the second half of January 2027, it looked like this:
- from CZK 32,400 return, Prague–Balmaceda
- fastest connection about 30 hours of travel one way
- but the cheapest options up to 70 hours: with this destination it pays to look at time, not just price
"The flight is too expensive" is a sentence I hear regularly. Thirty-two thousand for a journey to the other end of the world is not much. What is too much is flying there and staying a week.
When to buy a flight
This is where the most common mistake is made: waiting for the flight to get cheaper outside the peak season. It will not. I tried the same search for a March date and it came out more expensive.
- Second half of January 2027: from CZK 35,600 for a connection under 30 hours; the absolute cheapest option CZK 32,400: but with 44 hours of travel.
- First half of March 2027: from CZK 40,100 for a connection under 34 hours. Four to five thousand more than in January.
The reason is simple: no direct route from Europe reaches Balmaceda, and the final leg from Santiago is served by only a few flights a day. Prices here are not driven by the European season, but by how full the connecting flights are. Therefore:
- Buy five to six months in advance. For a January date, that means deciding by November.
- Filter by travel time, not by price. The difference between 30 and 44 hours costs three thousand and two days of your life.
- Watch the connecting flight to Balmaceda separately. January and February are also the Chilean summer holidays, and domestic flights south are at their busiest of the year.
- Plan for one night in Santiago on the way there. A same-day connection looks good on paper: until something is delayed.
Why the second half of January, specifically
Our first expedition goes into the fjord January 20 to February 3, 2027. That is no coincidence:
- Some of the longest days of the year and the warmest water in the fjord, 8 to 14 °C.
- On January 28, Puerto Aysén celebrates the town's anniversary. We will be there.
- February already starts cutting into the daylight: by early March there is two hours less of it.
If you are choosing between Aysén and the far south for January, see Aysén or Torres del Paine?
When not to go to Aysén
- If you need certainty about the weather. You will not get it in any month.
- For less than ten days. The journey alone swallows nearly two days each way. A week-long trip means you barely find your bearings.
- If you want signal. Mobile coverage works in Coyhaique, in Puerto Aysén and along the main road. In the fjord, zero.
The most important thing is not the month
For thirty-seven years I kept telling myself I would go to Patagonia "someday". Someday is not a date.
The best time is January and February. The best date is the one you write in your calendar and then buy the flight around.
When would you want to go, and what is still holding you back?
